Why Most People Export Video at the Wrong Settings (And How to Fix It)
Your videos look worse than they should. Here's why your export settings are probably wrong and how to fix them for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and more.

I've watched countless people spend hours editing beautiful videos, only to export them with settings that make them look like they were filmed on a potato from 2009. The worst part? They have no idea what went wrong.
Here's the thing: your editing software's default export settings are usually terrible. They're designed to be "safe" and "compatible," which in practice means low quality and bloated file sizes. Let me show you what's actually going wrong and how to fix it.
The Most Common Export Mistakes
1. Using CBR (Constant Bitrate) instead of VBR (Variable Bitrate)
Most people just accept whatever bitrate mode their software defaults to. But here's what you need to know: CBR allocates the same bitrate to every frame, whether it's a static shot or an action scene. VBR adjusts the bitrate based on complexity.
A static shot of someone talking against a plain background needs way less data than a fast-moving drone shot over a cityscape. VBR handles this intelligently — CBR wastes bits on simple frames and starves complex ones.
Use VBR 2-pass for final exports. It takes slightly longer (the encoder analyzes the whole video first), but the quality-to-filesize ratio is dramatically better.
2. Exporting at the wrong resolution
Just because you filmed in 4K doesn't mean you should export in 4K for every platform. Instagram Stories? They'll crush your 4K down to 1080p anyway (and do a worse job than you would). TikTok? Same deal.
Here's my rule: export at the resolution your audience will actually watch.
- YouTube: 4K if you want the quality badge and better encoding treatment. 1080p for everything else.
- Instagram Feed/Reels: 1080p max. Any higher is wasted bandwidth.

- Frame rate: 30fps (Instagram doesn't handle 60fps well)

Instagram's compression is brutal, especially on Reels. Export at higher quality than seems necessary, because they're going to destroy it anyway. At least start with something good.
TikTok

- Frame rate: 30fps (60fps if you have fast motion)
- Bitrate: 8-12 Mbps

- Format: MP4 or MOV
TikTok's processing is actually better than Instagram's (hot take, but true). They handle motion better and don't compress as aggressively if you give them a clean source.
WhatsApp / Messaging Apps
If you're sending video through WhatsApp, Telegram, or similar apps, understand that they will absolutely demolish your quality. So don't bother with high settings.
- Resolution: 720p max (seriously)
- Bitrate: 3-5 Mbps
- Keep it under 30 seconds if possible (WhatsApp has better quality for shorter clips)
If quality matters, send a Google Drive or Dropbox link instead. If you need to compress your video for messaging, aim for file sizes under 25MB for best results.
The Bitrate Sweet Spot
People obsess over bitrate but don't really understand what they're doing. Too low = blocky mess. Too high = massive files with no visible improvement.

- 720p/30fps: 5-8 Mbps

If you filmed at 24fps, export at 24fps. If you filmed at 60fps, export at 60fps (or convert properly to 24/30fps using frame blending or optical flow, don't just drop frames).
The "cinematic 24fps" thing is real, but it only matters if you actually shot at 24fps and maintained proper shutter speed (1/48s). Converting 30fps to 24fps doesn't make it cinematic, it makes it stuttery.
For social media, 30fps is the safe choice. It's smooth enough, compatible everywhere, and smaller file sizes than 60fps.
60fps is great for gaming, sports, or anything with fast motion. But it doubles your file size and not all platforms handle it well (looking at you, Instagram).
Audio Settings People Ignore
Everyone obsesses over video quality and then exports audio at 96 kbps like it's 2005. Don't do this.
Minimum audio settings for 2026:
- Codec: AAC (not MP3 — AAC is better quality at same bitrate)
- Bitrate: 192 kbps minimum, 256-320 kbps for music-heavy content
- Sample rate: 48 kHz (industry standard)
- Channels: Stereo (mono only if it's truly mono source, like a podcast)
Bad audio ruins good video faster than bad video ruins good audio. People will tolerate slightly compressed visuals, but crunchy audio is instant turn-off.
The Real Export Workflow
Here's what I actually do:
1. Master Export — Full quality, high bitrate, ProRes or DNxHD if archiving. This is my source of truth.
2. Platform-Specific Exports — From the master, I create versions optimized for each platform. YouTube gets 4K, Instagram gets 1080p square/vertical, etc.
3. Test Upload — I always test on the actual platform before announcing anything. Upload as unlisted/private, check how it looks on mobile and desktop.
This sounds like extra work, but it's way faster than re-editing and re-exporting when you realize your video looks terrible after upload.

When File Size Actually Matters

In these cases, it's okay to lower bitrate or resolution strategically. But understand the trade-offs. Don't just hit "compress to X MB" and hope for the best.
Better approach: use VBR 2-pass, keep resolution appropriate, and set a bitrate that balances size and quality for your specific use case. Then preview the result before committing.
The Bottom Line
Your export settings matter more than you think. Spending hours color grading and tweaking edits doesn't mean anything if you export at 3 Mbps and upload to Instagram at 720p.
